Dining
Sue DeWalt has been in charge of Deer Valley Ranch’s food program for the last 32 years… and that means consistent, excellent food. We love to feed you a “western” menu with lots of beef, barbeque, enchiladas, steak and trout. But… we know you also love chicken, healthy fruit and salads, and plenty of variety. Sue’s specialty is her baked breads, desserts, and the best sopapillas anywhere (testimonials available). The food is healthy (nothing fried except the sopapillas), and there is, of course, plenty of it.
A dozen of our staff girls will be your “hostesses” for your meals, waiting on you and getting to know you and your family. Most of our family has a food background, and we are very proud of our dining room, our place settings, our atmosphere, and, of course, our food. We will sit you with other families (unless you request differently) and the entire meal is a true opportunity to “break bread” in a deeper sense. Cookout and special meals include our Monday and Thursday Wrangler’s Breakfast, Wednesday hamburger Cookout, Mexican Buffet, Trout night, Steak Cookout Ride, Barbeque Buffet, Special Saturday night dessert table, Deck Lunch, and Steak Night.
Saturday Night Buffet is a true dining experience. Walk into the dining room to be greeted by an eye-catching and savory spread consisting of oven-fresh, homemade orange rolls, honey-sweet ham, tender roast beef, tasty elk meatballs, green beans with almonds and craisins, pasta dishes, several fresh salads and much more. But this is only the beginning of the culinary event. Who could turn down an opportunity to visit the Dessert Buffet? Just one glance at the tempting display of cookie tortes, layer cakes, cream pies, cheesecakes and chocolate-dipped strawberries will send your head spinning and mouth watering! Want seconds, or thirds? No problem!

Steak Cookout Ride Dinner. Perhaps because this is our only evening meal cooked and served outdoors or maybe it’s because you ride a horse two hours to get to it or maybe it’s because it’s served on top of a ridge overlooking the scenic Chalk Creek Valley, but many claim this is by far their favorite meal of the week: Rib-eye steak, marinated, seasoned and grilled to perfection,

Mexican Buffet Lunch. Likely our most popular lunch of the week. Build-your-own tacos or burritos with either hard or soft shells. Fill with pork carnita, beef, black beans and refried beans, then top with all the extras including homemade salsa and pico de gallo. If you still have room on your plate, try the homemade Mexican Cheese and enchiladas. And then there’s Sue’s famous, homemade sopapillas. This traditional Mexican pastry, slightly crispy, warm and golden is served with banana and chocolate mousse pudding on the side (some folks fill their sopapilla with the pudding instead of the traditional honey).
| "One of our favorite activities at Deer Valley Ranch is the Wrangler's Breakfast up in the mountains where we have a tasty breakfast, a devotional and then sing "America the Beautiful" with gorgeous mountain scenery." ~ The Pearsons from Wichita, Kansas |
Wrangler’s Breakfast. We often say that the Wrangler’s breakfast is everything that defines Deer Valley. Twice a week we will take you several miles to different sites by horseback riding, hiking, or cattle truck to enjoy scrambled eggs, bacon, grits, applesauce donuts, coffee and hot chocolate. With Mt. Antero to the south and the Chalk Cliffs to the north we end our meal with a flag ceremony and devotional by one of the ranch staff.
Steak Night. A favorite among returning guests and staff. Start out with fresh tossed salad with sea legs and feta cheese. Served with Sue’s homemade, soft and tender Swiss cheese bread. The main course is grilled New York strip steak, topped with optional mushroom sauce. Served with famous, cheesy Texas potatoes and fresh broccoli with Hollandaise sauce. Dessert is Peanut Butter Ice Cream Pie in a chocolate crust. Goes great with freshly-brewed coffee.
