Other Activities
Come by the office and make a tee time for complimentary golf in Salida or Buena Vista. Both are in beautiful settings and the high altitude can lengthen your drive (or slice) appreciably.Four wheel drive rentals are available close by at both the historic town of St. Elmo and at Buena Visa Jeeps. Enjoy an afternoon touring the old mountain roads on Tincup Pass, or over Hancock Pass to the Alpine Tunnel.
For those interested in geology and such, there are plenty of local options for rock hounding. The local Rock Doc rock shop is a good starting place for information about the Gem Park on Mt. Antero, old mine dumps, and the National Mining Museum in Leadville. This area is one of the most unusual geological areas in the U.S.

While you are horseback riding, hiking, fishing or four-wheeling, don’t forget to take time for wildflower-viewing. Some folks go on the all day fishing trip just to view the alpine wildflowers: Chiming Bells, Fringed Gentian, Blue Columbine – Colorado’s state flower, Monkshood, Silvery Lupine, Sky Pilot, Elephants Head, Scarlet Gilia, King’s Crown, Evening Primrose, Alpine Sunflower and Yellow Stonecrop, among others. Don’t forget to purchase a wildflower identification book in our Trading Post.
Is shopping a key part of your vacation? Start with Deer Valley Ranch's own Trading Post next to our office. You will find lots of quality clothing - sweatshirts, hoodies, jackets, microfleece and ballcaps - all with Ranch artwork and logo. Purchase a cowboy hat here as well as special gift items and any sundry items you may have forgotten. The nearby towns of Buena Vista and Salida both have quaint downtowns with fun and unique shops. Salida in particular has several "artsy" boutiques with pottery, jewelry and paintings as well as clothing. If you would like to travel a bit further, head over Independence to Aspen or over Hoosier Pass to Breckenridge, both lovely ski towns with great summer shopping surrounded by beautiful flowers. If relaxation is at the top of your list, pull up an Adirondack chair on our massive west-facing deck – or on your cabin’s private deck - and in between chapters of a good book, gaze up at 14er Mt. Antero and perhaps snooze a little.
Our Evening Program changes each night. You are invited to our Hymn Sing on Sunday night, followed by Square Dancing (Monday), a History Talk or Ranch History PowerPoint presentation, Hayride/Campfires, our Western Party staff show, and a farewell Open House on Friday.

Square Dance: A staff favorite. From the hokey pokey for young children to the Texas Two Step, you will get a chance to learn a few “steps” out on the lodge deck on Monday night. Our whole staff joins in and even puts on a few demonstration dances at the end of the evening. We do basic square dancing, a few line dances and some circle dances. Bring your petticoats.

Hayride / Campfire: Hop on the ranch haywagon and let our old trucks pull you up the road a couple miles to our campfire site. Sip hot chocolate around the fire, gaze up at the starry sky over the Cliffs, and listen to our cowboys sing and share some western poetry. Old West entertainment in a spectacular setting.
Western Party: For fifty five years the Deer Valley staff has entertained our guests on Thursday nights with hilarious skits, western music, and “involunteer” participation. Watch your own kids as they “perform” in the teen and kids’ skits, and watch out for flying water…or flying cowboys.
